It seems a good idea to encourage easy reuse of honey jars by using labels which may be easily removed and asking customers to return jars after finishing the honey.

But there is a snag to this plan in the form of food labelling regulations which state that:

To sell food and drink products, the label must be*:

  • clear and easy to read
  • permanent [my emphasis]
  • easy to understand
  • easily visible
  • not misleading

I have very few requests for labels with peelable adhesive, most beekeepers tell me that they have very few jars returned for reuse, and when my current stocks are exhausted will not be replacing them.
